The Secret of Double Injection

The Technique

The moulding process known as Doble Injection or Double-Shot Mouldingconsists in moulding a material (in this case plastic) around a preform to combine both materials. First, the initial piece is moulded, going on to a second mould where it is shot a second time with a second material so that both join in a single piece.

It’s not a very extended technique yet in our sector, being us in Solera from the very few who use it in their processes. However, don’t think of it as a recently devised methodology.

The Secret was there

Actually, it has been used since the 70s; although with a different end from our current implementation. It served as fabrication technology for keyboard keycaps, where the mechanism of every keycap was covered with a second material making the visible part of the keycap. This way, the resulting product did not just contain the mechanisms; it become one with them

With the arrival of membrane keyboards, mechanic keyboards, and keycaps made through this method became something of the past at the end of the 90s. The “clac” “clac” sound of the loud plastic pieces was gradually replaced as companies updated their equipment by the thuds of their membrane counterparts. Nevertheless, this didn’t spell the end for this technique, as the technology that a sector abandons, another sector can take advantage of. Here is where we come in.

We only had to rediscover it

Even if joining two pieces in one to benefit from the qualities of both is an interesting outcome and advantage, it’s not the only use that this technique can provide.

When using compatible materials (plastics), they can adhere to each other in such a way that a union at the molecular level occurs, ensuring the absence of leaks in the final product and guaranteeing that the piece is properly sealed.

Also, it results in an improvement of fabrication processes that provides with greater efficiency, as the work that had to be done before by two machines is now performed seamlessly by one. Moreover, we shouldn’t forget about the improvement in safety that it causes, due to the fact that the same preform that had to be manually transported to the second machine doesn’t need any moving now, as every part of the process happens in the same spot.

In Solera we move forward to the future without leaving the present behind.

Inventions aren’t made to be disposed of when losing their uses, they're made to be reborn with new value and benefits through the power of innovation
